ADVENTURE

NO RISK NO GAIN

This summer camp was organized by Pakistan Innovation Foundation and hosted by Cadet College Hasanabdal. It took place in 2018's July, between 10th and 19th. It was a physical camp involving youngsters from all across Pakistan. It was a science school, consisting of science activities and subjects. There were four subjects to choose from: Computer Science, Engineering, Aeronautics, Robotics and Astronomy, where I choose Robotics.

The Application

The application phase had two parts: a form and a test. The initial section of the form asked for basic, personal information, followed by two detailed and tricky questions. One of the questions asked about the science faire, academic and fun for fun activities while the other posed a very creative yet question: "What one thing would you create if you had unlimited resources and time?". My answer to  the first question was very straight forward and up to the mark, where I listed all my academic successes and science activities. My approach to the second question was rather unique, bringing space exploration into play and endorsing the creation of a machine which would try to find life or it's possibilities in space. As of the test, it comprised of 15 questions. Despite the fact that the test was open-book, the questions were alien to the internet, making me only score a mere 33%. But luckily, I was shortlisted for the interview!

The Interview

I was interviewed online on Skype and my interview lasted for only about 10 minutes. I questions I was asked were very peculiar. They were totally new to me. Most of my answers did seem to satisfy the interviewer but the following question left me totally blank: "How does gravity exist?". Moreover, I was question about the reason for seasons' origin as well as about why was I an ideal candidate for the summer camp. My answers to these did win me a spot among the selected candidates. I was able to explain the reason for seasons' existence, thanks to geography skills. I wasn't pressurized at all during the interview, neither did I hold significant desire to get through the interview. My approach towards entire selection process was rather casual but calm, which, to my fancy, led to my selection.

The Summer Camp

It was a 10-day summer camp during which I carried out a wide range of activities. I studied all the four subjects which were offered at the start of the application, but my final project was in my chosen subject, Robotics. Firstly, I teamed up with a couple of other participants and we created a plane made of Basla Wood, a project related to the field of aeronautics.

Thereafter, we also took a lecture about Astronomy, taught my Pakistan's most learned person regarding the field. The introduced us to the beauty of the subject, discuss the fascinating possibilities of finding life in space as well as highlight the uniqueness of a number of different planets which are part of the Milky Way galaxy. From the loneliness of Jupiter, to probable existence of life on Mars, everything was covered.

Moreover, precious subjects such as , Synthetic Biology Quantum Physics and Entrepreneurship were all brought to light. Fun activities included Horse Ridding, Shooting, Archery, Cricket, Swimming, and Football. We also visited Pakistan Aeronautical Complex, located in Kamra. But our hiking plan was cancelled because of the unstable weather.

It was an unprecedented experience! Meeting different people from around Pakistan was pretty rewarding. I got a taste of different cultures, languages and traditions as people from all the provinces formed a part of the camp. I learned to mix up with different types people and my confidence and patience boosted. I met people of different moods and nature: some were rude, others were friendly, some were introverts, others extroverts, some were confident, others timid. It was a magnificent time, an unforgettable journey!

The Final Project & Winning

For the final project, the participants were split into teams. Each team had three to five people. Mine had four. Before the teams were created, all of us were categorized according to our chosen field, in which we were supposed to carry out out final project. Our final project was in Robotics. There were a total of four to five teams competing in this field alone, resulting in tough competition. Our aim was to create tow robots, where one would detect colors from the surroundings and send signals to the other. Afterwards, the other would detect the sent color in its surroundings and hit the object. We were successful in creating well-designed and well-programmed robots which served the purpose very effectively. Meanwhile, the best team from each field was going to win a prize and my team won the third prize, which consisted of a 25,000 PKR cash prize and a shield for each team member.
